Durban – KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni on Tuesday urged communities to fight the "devastating resurgence of drug usage" in the province.

An ecstasy-based pill called Mercedes had caused a number of deaths among young people and led to several others being hospitalised, she told reporters in Durban.

Nkonyeni was discussing the department’s efforts to improve the province’s matric results.

"We want to urge communities to be on the lookout and report those who are responsible for distribution of these drugs, because what they are doing is treasonous," she said.

Nkonyeni said the future of the country was at stake. The drug had been made available to young people rapidly.

"We have also seen some cases where learners have killed each other in schools. We appeal to all the community-based organisations to work with us in making sure that our kids are discouraged from carrying weapons to school," she said.

Nkonyeni urged media outlets to help the department with programmes aimed at eradicating social ills.

"If we eradicate these issues, it will automatically ensure a conducive environment to teaching and learning, which will produce the desired results we know our kids can produce."
