Pietermaritzburg - Twice as many drunk drivers have spent time behind bars in KZN this festive season compared to last year.

To date, since the festive season began on December 1, various authorities under the Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison have arrested 218 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol, exactly double the number nabbed last year.

In addition, 4 981 motorists have been arrested for speeding, up from 3 839 last year. The arrests come as 115 487 vehicles have been pulled over in a series of roadblocks across the province.

“There will be 587 people who will be without vehicles because we suspended them for various defects this year as compared to last year, when we issued 556 suspensions on vehicles,” said MEC Willies Mchunu.

“Moreover, the number of crashes in the province has dropped from last year’s 131 to this year’s 105.

“This has also seen fewer fatalities of 123 this year compared to 155 last year, although we maintain that one life lost is one too many.”

The South African Medical Association (Sama) yesterday expressed “concern and regret” at the “carnage” on national roads since the start of the holiday season.

One of Sama’s major concerns is drunk driving, which according to them, contributes to almost half the number of road related deaths in the country.

The organisation called for an inter-sectoral collaboration in developing alcohol harm reduction strategies that involve government sectors, NGOs as well as road safety authorities working together to reduce harm associated with alcohol.
