Cape Town - The Du Toitskloof Pass has been reopened following massive mountain fires in the Paarl area that saw homes being evacuated.

The pass was reopened at around 06:00 on Saturday morning after being closed for nearly two days, Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa told News24.

Africa said the pass is now safe after being closed since Thursday afternoon.

Volunteer Wildfire Services tweeted on Saturday that the fire is 70% contained, and that there were currently two active fire lines that posed no immediate threat.

Homes in the Hawequas Mountains were evacuated on Thursday after wildfires crossed the pass.

Four Helicopters, four ground teams and 48 people were deployed to the scene, and the homes were subsequently saved.

Western Cape Disaster Management warned on Friday evening of dry, hot conditions and strong winds increasing the risk of fires on the West Coast.

Western Cape local government MEC Anton Bredell called on travellers to take extra care over the next few weeks to prevent fires, and to report fires immediately.
