Durban - A 65-year-old Amanzimtoti man sustained serious injuries when a boat he was on capsized and struck him in the back three times on Monday, paramedics said.

The boat capsized after one of its engines failed at Reunion Beach near the Isipingo River around 14:00, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

All the occupants fell overboard, but managed to right the boat again.

Paramedics found the boat running in a circle on its remaining engines. During that time it had struck the 65-year-old man three times in the back.

A paramedic paddled out to the man, helped him onto a board and then back into the boat, where the 65-year-old stopped the running engines.

The man was put back onto the board and paddled back to shore, where he was treated before being taken to a local hospital.

All the other occupants boarded the boat and it was brought back to shore.
