Durban - Hundreds of police officers on Wednesday paid homage to slain Durban cop, Warrant Officer Ashok Ramsakkan, with a police procession.

Ramsakkan, a veteran member of the Flying Squad, was shot and wounded by AK47-wielding gunmen in KwaMashu last week. On Monday night Ramsakkan succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The policeman was shot in the neck when his patrol car was sprayed with automatic gunfire.

The memorial procession travelled south along the N2 freeway and through parts of the Durban CBD.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane told News24 that officers who were killed in the line of duty were honoured with an official state funeral.

"There are expected to be quite a few people for his funeral. It will take place in Clare Estate."

Provincial police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni earlier sent her condolences to Ramsakkan's family saying the case would be "investigated effectively".

"You will be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time of your lives. We pray that the love of God enfolds the family, friends and colleagues during this period of mourning," she said.
