Durban - A suspect was killed by security guard after responding to an alarm activation in Stamford Hill in Durban on Sunday morning.

In a statement, Marshall Security said one of its officers was responding to an alarm activation when he was attacked by two men.

"The suspects attacked the armed reaction officer as he was attempting to leave the premises, striking him several times on his head with a large rock. In fear for his life, and in an attempt to defend himself, the officer discharged his firearm, striking one of the suspects. The remaining suspects fled the scene in an unknown direction," the company said.

The suspect was declared dead by paramedics, it said.

"An extensive search was conducted for the remaining suspects involved, however, they remain at large."

The injured guard was treated on the scene and, once stabilised, taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
