WATCH: Shots fired at DUT as students, police clash

Durban - The Durban University of Technology’s SRC on Tuesday condemned the violence that broke out on their campus.

“We cannot condone violence. Some students will get hurt and some will get arrested. This thing of violence is out of order. At the end of the day, if we throw stones, police will retaliate,” Student Representative Council president Zama Mncube said.

Police and DUT students clashed outside the ML Sultan campus on Tuesday after students, many in Economic Freedom Fighters regalia, hurled bricks at passing vehicles and police. Police fired stun grenades.

Mncube said she did not expect violence later in the day. Another meeting with university management was scheduled for Wednesday morning.

On Monday, protesting students removed their colleagues from lectures at the ML Sultan and Ritson Road campuses and marched on City campus. On their way, they blocked traffic in Warwick Junction.

DUT spokesperson Alan Khan said Wednesday’s meeting would include National Student Financial Aid Scheme and senior education department officials.
