Johannesburg - An East Rand man shot dead two men allegedly trying to rob him in his Norkem Park home, police said on Friday.

The home owner and a friend were relaxing outside the house when two armed men confronted them around 21:00 on Thursday, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

The men forced the owner and his friend into the home at gunpoint.

"Whilst inside the house, the owner managed to take his firearm and a shoot-out ensued between him and the suspects. Two suspects were fatally shot and were found in possession of two unlicensed firearms," Dlamini said.

A silver Suzuki, believed to be their getaway car, was found a few metres from the house. The two suspects had not yet been identified, but it was suspected they had been involved in other serious and violent crimes.
