Ngqamakhwe - A 76-year-old man was arrested on Friday for allegedly raping his 33-year-old granddaughter in Ngqamakhwe, Eastern Cape police said.

"The victim would be raped by her grandfather when she went to do the cleaning for the suspect [since January this year]," Captain Jackson Manatha  said.

A community member told the woman's grandmother about the alleged rape.

The grandmother did not live with the man.

"The suspect would threaten his 33-year-old granddaughter to not tell anyone about the rape as he would kill her," said Manatha.

He said social workers interviewed the woman, who broke down and told them about how she had been raped for a year.

The man has been charged with rape and is expected to appear in the Ngqamakhwe Magistrate's Court on Monday.
