King Williams Town – A 30-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday in the Centane Regional Magistrate's Court for repeatedly raping a woman in the presence of her husband, police said.

Captain Jackson Manatha said the man was also sentenced to five years in prison for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily, for stabbing the 96-year-old husband of the victim.

The accused entered the homestead of the victim on May 7, 2014, in Mangweni location, Tutura Village, Centane.

He was armed with a knife.

"He repeatedly raped the 65-year-old woman and, when her husband tried to intervene, he was stabbed in his upper body," Manatha said.

The accused was linked through DNA.

"He pleaded not guilty, but because of the overwhelming evidence, he later pleaded guilty to both charges," he said.

Brigadier Stanley Sibhidla congratulated the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for a job well done.

"I hope the sentence will serve as deterrence to those who still think of attacking women and children," Sibhidla said.
