Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni quits KZN provincial executive just a week after appointment

2016-03-08 19:30

Durban – Barely a week since she was appointed as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal's provincial executive committee (PEC), Peggy Nkonyeni has resigned saying she would rather focus on her responsibilities as education MEC.

ANC Provincial Secretary Super Zuma on Tuesday said the provincial working committee had received, considered and unconditionally accepted Nkonyeni's resignation from the PEC.

On Wednesday last week Zuma announced that Nkonyeni along with Solomon Mkhombo and Bheki Sibiya had been co-opted. The decision was taken on February 20.

Zuma said, "After the decision was made we communicated the decision of the PEC to all comrades who were co-opted and further invited them to the PEC meeting, including comrade Peggy Nkonyeni who sent an apology for that meeting.

"Subsequently Nkonyeni asked to be given an opportunity to focus on her deployment as the education MEC in our province."

Nkonyeni was not immediately available for comment.
