Johannesburg - The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has arrested 234 motorists including 67 drunken drivers over the Easter weekend so far, it said on Saturday.

EMPD Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Wilfred Kgasago said the operations began on Thursday and were expected to continue until Monday.

Kgasago said 30 drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol were apprehended in Nigel, Duduza, KwaThema, Tsakane and Etwatwa, 21 in Edenvale and Tembisa, seven in Boksburg and six in Katlehong, Germiston, Vosloorus and Tokoza.

"Fifty-one drivers arrested for warrants issued on outstanding traffic fines were released after paying the outstanding fines and the contempt of court amounting to R300 for each fine.

"Over and above, 59 roadworthy vehicles were impounded with more than 6 000 fines issued for various offences including moving violations and defects."

Kgasago said the police also recovered stolen property and vehicles during the operation.

"Six suspects were apprehended for narcotics valued at more than R20 000 with 12 Zimbabwean nationals nabbed for theft of four stolen compressors worth around R700 000.

"We found two unlicensed firearms, three stolen vehicles and four stolen compressors from a construction site in Kempton Park – one recovered in Benoni, two in Randburg and one in Germiston.

"Four suspects ended up behind bars following the torching of two houses and a motor vehicle in Daveyton."

Kgasago said one fatal accident that took place on Saturday in Sharon Park, Springs was reported.

"EMPD officers will be out in full force sustaining the intensity of the operations and throwing the book at all who use the Easter weekend period to display unacceptable behaviour in the city of Ekurhuleni."
