Durban - An elderly man was allegedly brutally beaten and left for dead after his car collided with another vehicle in Durban on Friday night.

Crisis Medical spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said the 83-year-old man was travelling with his grandson on Friday evening when his car collided with another vehicle on Inanda Road in Newlands.

“It was a low-impact collision, however, it appears that the driver and passenger of the other vehicle pulled the man out of his car and beat him.

“The man sustained serious head injuries and is in a critical condition in a City hospital.”

He said the driver and passenger fled the scene and are still at large.

In another incident, a Pietermaritzburg family was seriously injured when their car collided with another vehicle on Friday afternoon on the N3 near the Market Road turn-off.

It was alleged that the car carrying a mother, father and teenage daughter was “nicked” by a truck and pushed over the median into the fast lane of the northbound lane.

The car, which was travelling southbound, collided with an oncoming vehicle.

The family was trapped in the wreckage and had to be cut out with the jaws of life.

ER24 spokesperson Paul Knoesen said the mother was in a critical condition when emergency services arrived with the father and daughter having sustained “very serious injuries”.

The family were taken to Edendale Hospital.

The mother remains in a critical condition and was transferred to Albert Luthuli’s neurological ICU with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain.

On Saturday, 18 people were injured when a bus collided with another vehicle on the R61 near Southbroom on the Hibiscus Coast.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said one person was critically injured, while two others sustained serious injuries and 15 minor injuries.

McKenzie said an accident yesterday morning in Uthukela left one person dead and 12 others injured when a minibus fell down a 50-metre embankment Ndaba Road in the district.

In another incident yesterday, a man was killed and two injured when their vehicle rolled off the N11, outside Ladysmith.
