Durban - A video of an elderly woman being hijacked by a group of heavily armed men in Chatsworth on Tuesday has surfaced on social media.

The video, which has been viewed more than 100 000 times, shows the woman being hijacked of her white Mercedes Benz.

A grey vehicle stops in front of her car at an intersection, apparently opposite the Hare Krishna Temple.

A group of about four armed men, with one man carrying what appears to be a rifle, jump out of the car in front and head toward her passenger window.

One of them knocks the window with what appears to be a pistol. Another man goes to the driver's door and orders her out.

The woman in black clothes is then seen trying to get help from a white bakkie that had also stopped at the red traffic light.

The 52-second long video was taken in broad daylight. Pedestrians and other cars can be seen going past the intersection while the woman is being hijacked.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said the complainant alleged that she was seated inside her stationary vehicle at a set of traffic lights on Tuesday at about 16:10 when she was accosted by an unknown number of unidentified suspects.

"At gunpoint the suspects robbed her of her vehicle and drove off. The vehicle was later recovered by police," she said.

A case of carjacking was opened at Chatsworth police station for investigation, Mbhele added.
