Ethiopian shop owner arrested for allegedly beating robber to death

Johannesburg - An Ethiopian shop owner from Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg, has been arrested and charged with murder for allegedly beating a robber to death, police said on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old was arrested on Tuesday and was expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday, spokesperson Warrant Officer David Mavimbela said.

According to Mavimbela, the deceased man and his accomplices broke into the Ethiopian man's shop in the middle of the night earlier this year in Diepsloot extension two, while the owner and another were asleep inside the store.

The group then pointed guns at the two men and stole an undisclosed amount of cash and other items.

As the group fled the shop, one of the men was caught by the shop owner and was subsequently assaulted, Mavimbela said.

"According to an eyewitness, two men, including the 35-year-old suspect, assaulted the deceased with an object upon apprehending him on the rooftop.

"It is believed that a group of other suspects later joined the alleged fatal assault, which had continued after the deceased had fallen to the ground," Mavimbela said.

When paramedics arrived on the scene, the man had already sustained serious head injuries and died soon afterwards.

Although the atmosphere was tense after the incident, Mavimbela said the police had managed to assure the community that the suspects would be brought to book.
