Johannesburg - Gugu Zulu's one-year-old daughter, Lelethu, wearing a grey dress and cream coat, started crying as her racing driver father's memorial service got under way on Tuesday.

Tears also streamed down the face of the little girl's mom, Letshego, who was by her husband's side as he was carried down Mount Kilimanjaro last week in the middle of the night to get urgent medical attention after he suffered from flu-like symptoms.

The much beloved Gugu Zulu married Letshego in 2014 after he proposed to her on the finish line of the Cape Epic, and the couple's daughter was born last year. On Tuesday, she was wearing a long blue dress and black shawl.

Letshego, who embarked on many adventurous activities alongside her husband, was supported by his parents in the front row at his memorial service in Kyalami, Midrand, where he spent many hours on the racing course.

Mourners came in large numbers to bid him farewell, openly shedding tears as they viewed a display of Zulu's race cars and pictures at the entrance of the hall.

Also in attendance were musician Loyiso Bala, Hlomla Dandala and Gauteng Premier David Makhura.

South African Council of Churches general secretary Malusi Mpumlwana lead the service in prayer, while Dandala was the programme director.

Zulu died last week Monday, on Nelson Mandela Day, while climbing mount Kilimanjaro for Trek4Mandela with his wife.
