Johannesburg- A 33-year-old man has been arrested for clocking the highest speed ever recorded for this festive season, while being three times over the legal limit for alcohol, Johannesburg metro police said.

Spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the man, who was driving a red Audi A4 was arrested on Sunday morning on the N3 just after the Malboro off-ramp.

“A JMPD High Speed unit had just finished setting up their equipment this morning on the N3 south at the Marlboro off ramp... at about 06:30 when the man who was with three friends was caught doing 228km/h. He also registered 0.70mg/ml on a breathalyzer - which was nearly three times above the legal limit,” said Minnaar.

The man allegedly told officers that they were coming from a party and he had taken the wrong road and was driving fast to get onto the M1 freeway.

“The man was charged for reckless and negligence as well as drunken driving at Sandton Police Station with ten other drivers who were also caught for speeding,” said Minnaar.
