Durban - Three people were killed and fourteen others were injured when a minibus taxi slammed into a bridge on the N2 near Zinkwazi, north of Durban, on Wednesday.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said the minibus, which was loaded with passengers, had veered from the road and collided with concrete bridge pillars.

"Upon arrival, paramedics and firefighters found persons entrapped in the minibus taxi as well as passengers who had been ejected from the vehicle, some distance from where the wreckage came to rest," he said.

"KwaDukuza fire and rescue services set about gaining access to the entrapped using the jaws of life. Two persons, both children, were declared deceased on the scene. Two more patients were critical and required advanced life support intervention. Unfortunately one of the critical patients passed away a short well later," he added.

Herbst said fourteen others sustained moderate to minor injuries and were transported to various medical facilities.

"The N2 was closed for a period of time and has since been reopened."
