Durban - A “heartless” father was this week sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of his two daughters in Nongoma Regional Court.

The man, who cannot be named as it may lead to the victims being identified, was convicted of rape and kidnapping the siblings, police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said in a statement.

“Two victims aged… 21 and 23 were at Bhuqwini area, Nongoma when they were raped by their father [between] October 2014 to November 2014.

The victims were scared to report the matter as their father used to assault them as well,” he said.

The father also at one point strangled the women.

“Eventually, a case of rape, assault and kidnapping was opened in December 2014 at Nongoma police station for further investigation. Police immediately arrested the accused and he was charged with rape, assault as well as kidnapping.”

The 56-year-old man was handed a life sentence as well as 12 years imprisonment for kidnapping after his conviction.

KwaZulu-Natal police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the sentence should serve as a warning to would-be rapists.

“The accused was supposed to be a good example to his children and protect them [from] any form of abuse but he acted otherwise,” she said.
