City Fire and Rescue spokesperson Liezl Moodie said strong winds continued to fan the flames.

At least 10 firefighting trucks, along with three helicopters, had been deployed to the scene.

"City firefighters are still being assisted by Table Mountain National Parks," said Moodie.

While the fire was not immediately threatening any houses in the area, residents of Mountain and Contour roads had been evacuated as a safety precaution.

Firefighters were called to the area shortly before 10:00 on Thursday, where they found a train carriage on fire at the Fish Hoek railway station.

A body was found in one of three train carriages which had gone up in flames.

The gender of the victim was unknown.

Moodie said vegetation close to the railway station was also ablaze and the fire had spread towards the slopes.

It was not immediately clear what had caused the blaze.
