Durban - Five people were killed when a car overturned and rolled repeatedly on a reserve road near King Williams Town in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday.

Provincial government spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said emergency personnel had rushed to the scene between King Williams Town and Stutterheim in the early hours of the morning.

“An Opel Corsa overturned and all of the passengers, along with the driver, were killed instantly,” he said.

“The Jaws of Life had to be used to take the bodies out of the wreckage."

In another accident in the province, one person was killed on the R61 near Cradock when a vehicle left the road.

Later, six people were injured when a minibus hit a kudu near Middelburg, in the province.

“The provincial government reiterates the concern about these accidents and in the majority, they point to the unacceptable behaviour of drivers,” Kupelo said.

“There is total disregard for the rules of the road and we issue the warning that people will be brought to book. There is no such thing as Christmas for traffic officials in the Eastern Cape. We have deployed them in numbers to enforce the law."
