Kimberley – A former Northern Cape police constable was sentenced to five years in prison for corruption in the Port Nolloth Regional court, the Hawks said on Wednesday.

Danzel Engelbrecht, 27, was sentenced to five years imprisonment for three counts of corruption. The three sentences would run concurrently, said Lieutenant Philani Nkwalase.

He was given one month for possession of dagga - for which he paid a R150 fine – and three months imprisonment for possession of ammunition, suspended for five years.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm, he said.

Engelbrecht was arrested in July 2013.

This after he produced false documents to the director of a diamond company, which contained a police investigation implicating the company and its workers in foul play, said Nkwalase.

He then demanded payments for the privileged information he provided and was paid R300 and R900 consecutively.

He further demanded R40 000 and promised to make the pending investigation and imminent arrest fade away.

"His conviction sends a very strong message to all corrupt police officials and it should serve as deterrence to others," Hawks provincial head Major General Kholekile Galawe said.
