Pietermaritzburg - An elite task team on Tuesday hauled in four alleged criminals wanted for serious and violent incidents in the city centre.

The Pietermaritzburg police station’s tracing team, set up to track down some of the city’s most wanted criminals, arrested four men for murder, attempted murder, rape and business robbery cases.

Working through Tuesday, the team arrested one man wanted on a charge of attempted murder after he allegedly shot another man during an argument at a tavern in the CBD last week.

It is alleged the man fired a warning shot at the ceiling, but the bullet ricocheted and wounded the victim, who is currently in a serious condition at a Pietermaritzburg hospital.

It is believed the gunman went into hiding, but was stabbed in the stomach during a fight with his girlfriend at the weekend. The woman then handed the gun over to police.

The man handed himself over to police once he was discharged from hospital on Tuesday. It is believed he will open a case against his girlfriend after the stabbing incident.

Also last week, a business on Church Street fell victim to three men who entered the shop posing as customers. The men allegedly assaulted the business owner and one employee before making off with two cellphones.

However, the trio were caught in the act by a CCTV camera hidden in the shop. Using the footage, the team arrested one man on Tuesday and are hunting for the remaining gang members.

In a separate case, a 21-year-old man was arrested for a murder which took place in the Dambuza area near Plessislaer at the weekend.

The victim was found dead with knife wounds across his body.

Following up on information, the tracing team arrested the young man on Tuesday.

The team’s quick work also led to the arrest of an alleged rapist on the same day he committed the crime.

On Tuesday, a woman was walking in the CBD when she spotted her boyfriend stumbling out of a bush with another female. A heated argument ensued when she returned home and questioned her boyfriend’s behaviour.

It is believed the man assaulted her with an iron rod before raping her.

However, the woman escaped and reported the incident to the police, who arrested her boyfriend only a short time later.
