Pietermaritzburg - A motorist charged for drunk driving after crashing into a residential property in Northdale on Saturday, is expected to appear in court today.

The accident was one of five that occurred in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas over the weekend — in which four people were killed and 18 injured.

The alleged drunk driver, a 29-year-old man, sustained moderate injuries after the vehicle he was travelling in collided with a lamp pole and tree before crashing into the home.

The man allegedly attempted to flee the scene but was later found by police and members of the community.

According to a police source the man was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and was expected to appear in court today.

In a separate incident a man was killed while another person sustained moderate injuries after a truck and bakkie collided head-on on the R614 in Wartburg on Saturday morning.

Police were still investigating the cause of the accident. Netcare 911 paramedics said the man was declared dead on the scene due to the extensive injuries he sustained.

The other passenger was stabilised on scene and transported to hospital.

Also on Saturday morning, nine people were injured when a taxi overturned on Old Greytown Road and Khan Road in Pietermaritzburg.

It is believed the taxi had swerved to try and avoid another vehicle when it overturned.

Seven people were injured after a taxi and vehicle collided on Booth Road on Saturday afternoon.

When Rescue Care paramedics arrived on scene, the injured were treated and transported to various hospitals.
