Bloemfontein – A boyfriend who shot his ex-girlfriend and himself, and a woman who killed her son were among the murders committed in Botshabelo, Bloemfontein, since the start of the new year, Free State police said on Tuesday.

On Monday, a 25-year-old man took his father's licensed 9mm pistol and went to the home of his 23-year-old ex-girlfriend, Constable Peter Kareli said.

He found the young woman with her aunt and the aunt's two-year-old child. When the woman refused to speak to him, he allegedly shot and killed her and then turned the gun on himself. The child was injured in the leg and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

On Friday, a 58-year-old woman allegedly stabbed and killed her 23-year-old son.

"It is not clear what might have fuelled the stabbing as the two were alone in their house. The victim was stabbed in the shoulder and the chest," he said.

Also on that day, a 14-year-old boy was killed when he was knocked down by a white Mazda 3. The driver fled the scene and was still at large.
