Cape Town - Judith Macgregor, British High Commissioner to South Africa, will receive one Britain's most distinguished honours when she becomes a dame.

She is one of many public servants celebrated in Queen Elizabeth’s 2016 New Year honours list, and one of four South African-based people who were honoured this year for their work in supporting those in need and working to improve the lives of others.

The honours, which include awards for the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), The Dame Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (DCMG) and the British Empire Medal (BEM), are part of the royal New Year celebrations.

The new list was published on Thursday.

- Jackie Barclay, the British Honorary Consul in Port Elizabeth, was honoured with an MBE for his work with British Nationals in the Eastern Cape.

He has held the job for almost 10 years, and has also worked as the chairperson of the 1820 Settlers Association.

- Margaret Golding received an MBE for her work with special needs children.

The 2011 Ambassador for Autism South was the inaugural principal of Vera School, the first school in South Africa for autistic children.

- Bronwen Jones, founder and director of Children of Fire, was awarded the BEM for her work with burn victims in Africa.

Her charity helps young burn victims and also educates communities about the prevention of such injuries.

Macgregor has worked as an ambassador to Slovakia, Mexico, Swaziland, Lesotho and South Africa.

She said she was honoured to have received the award.

"My team and I have achieved much in South Africa, enhancing the partnership between the United Kingdom and South Africa to the mutual benefit of our two countries: particularly in the fields of science, education, empowering young people and promoting trade and investment."

She said she looked forward to furthering the bond in the New Year and beyond.
