Johannesburg – The Gauteng health department on Tuesday said the four University of the Witwatersrand students who survived a horrific crash at the weekend are in a stable condition.

Seven students were killed when the minibus taxi they in which they were travelling collided with a trailer along the N1 south near Mokopane on Sunday night.

They were travelling back to Johannesburg from a Zion Christian Church pilgrimage in Moletjie, Polokwane.

Gauteng Health MEC, Qedani Mahlangu, visited the students at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic hospital on Tuesday.

Spokesperson for the health department, Steve Mabona, said fellow Wits representatives were also present during their visit.

He said the department had also met with the leadership of the church.
