Bloemfontein – A man was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly assaulted an elderly woman and left her in a pool of blood outside her house in Hoopstad, Free State police said.

The man appeared briefly in the Hoopstad Magistrate's Court on Friday. He was released pending further investigations, said police spokesperson Sergeant Ian Gaobepe.

Gaobepe said the police had found the 67-year-old Adri Maree badly wounded outside her home.

"She was lying on the ground – her face, as well as a rock next to her was covered in blood," he said.

Maree was in an Intensive Care Unit in the Bloemfontein Medi-Clinic.

"We found blood stains on the suspect’s jean and arrested him for the crime," he said.

He said the motive for the assault was unknown.
