Durban – A Free State EMS paramedic was allegedly assaulted by tow truck drivers on Saturday night, the provincial health department said on Sunday.

Department spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, said Yvonne Peter, 40, was allegedly attacked by the tow truckers who were allegedly racing with the ambulance, which was rushing to the same accident scene on McKenzie Street, next to a railway line in Heidedal.

It was not immediately clear how many truckers attacked Peter.

Mvambi said Peter suffered head injuries and her hairpiece was pulled off.

“She was racially insulted and accused of wanting to kill the tow truckers as she was driving in response to a train and motor vehicle accident at McKenzie Street next to railway line in Heidedal at about 22:30 on Saturday night.

“It is shocking for us that the tow truckers were almost racing with the ambulance in an effort to arrive earlier than an ambulance in the accident scene. The humane consideration and the rules of the road provide for the ambulance to be given a right of way, but this was not the case with the... [tow truck drivers] who ended up insulting and assaulting our EMS Rescue Personnel,” said Mvambi.
