Bloemfontein – A 21-year-old pupil who allegedly stabbed a female classmate 14 times at their school in Harankopane village appeared briefly at the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, Free State police said.

The case against the man, who was in Grade 12, was postponed to March 2 for a bail application, Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said. He would remain in custody until then.

Mophiring said on Monday that teachers called police to the Moteka Secondary School in QwaQwa after they witnessed the stabbing.

During an argument between the two pupils, the boy took out a knife and allegedly stabbed the 18-year-old Grade 10 girl in front of other pupils. She was in hospital in a stable condition.

The provincial education department said it was shocked by the incident.

“The school is a safe place of learning and teaching and no form of violence against teachers or learners will be allowed within the premises,” spokesperson Howard Ndaba said.

The department had offered counselling to pupils who saw the stabbing.
