Bloemfontein – A two-year-old girl was killed and her parents were injured when someone fired into their shack in Wepener, Free State police said on Thursday.

The girl was hit in the head while strapped to her mother's back on Tuesday evening, said police spokesperson Sergeant Yanga Ngcukana.  She died on the scene.

The mother was shot in the chest and arm and her husband in the arm.

Eight spent cartridges were found on the scene. The parents were recovering in the Pelonomi hospital in Bloemfontein.

No arrests had been made yet, but Ngcukana said police were following a positive lead.
