Bloemfontein – A Free State woman, who was found buried alive in a shallow grave, is currently recovering in hospital, police said on Wednesday.

On Sunday morning, residents of Mabolela in QwaQwa found the woman badly beaten and with stones on top of her, police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring said.

"The woman was last seen on Saturday evening, leaving with an unknown man at a tavern. It is not yet known what exactly happened and reason for her bad assault," said Mophiring.

A case of attempted murder was being investigated.

No arrests had been made yet.
