ietermaritzburg - The 22-year-old car of a well known Pietermaritzburg struggle veteran was hijacked on Saturday afternoon.

Nishwanth Bundhoo and his son Visharad Bundhoo were held at gunpoint and had their vehicle stolen outside the Plessislaer Arya Samaj temple in Madurai Road, Pietermaritzburg.

The champagne-gold, 1993 model Toyota Corolla that was stolen belonged to Nishwanth’s father, ANC stalwart Dasarath Bundhoo.

He was one of the organisers of the All-in Africa Conference that took place in Pietermaritzburg on March 25, 1961 — at which Mandela made his last public speech before his capture and imprisonment for 27 years.

Dasarath Bundhoo also initiated the Gandhi Memorial Committee in 1989 and was involved with the unveiling of the Gandhi Statue in Church Street in 1993.

“A function just finished and my son and I were the last to close up [the temple] and leave,” said Nishwanth Bundhoo.

They had finished loading the car boot with equipment, including a video camera, projector and a bag of flutes which they had acquired from India, when they saw three men approach them.

“They casually crossed the road and walked towards us. One guy held a gun while the others searched us for the keys. They threw all other keys on the ground, took the car keys and drove off,” he said. Besides a R10 note, none of their other belongings were taken and luckily neither of them was harmed.

He said his son posted about the incident on Facebook and someone spotted the car at the quarry at about 6.30 am on Sunday — but when they got to the site the car was gone.

He also mentioned that, a few weeks ago, someone attempted to break into the car at the Plessislaer Arya Samaj temple.
