Johannesburg - The alliance in Gauteng on Wednesday welcomed the return of ANC Gauteng chairperson Paul Mashatile to the provincial government.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura on Tuesday night, during an announcement on a cabinet reshuffle, appointed Mashatile MEC of human settlements and co-operative governance and traditional affairs.

Mashatile is the former minister of arts and culture. He was replaced by Nathi Mthethwa after the 2014 general elections.

The provincial chair has been an MP since the elections, but will resign from his position in Parliament to take up his new role in Gauteng.

The ANC, SA Communist Party, Congress of SA Trade Unions and the SA National Civic Organisation in Gauteng said Mashatile had extensive experience in government.

"We are confident he will contribute meaningfully to the province," the alliance said in a statement.

Makhura had announced three changes.

Nandi Mayathula-Khoza has been appointed as the MEC for social development and Jacob Mamabolo was moved to the department of infrastructure development.

The alliance said: "As a revolutionary alliance, we are confident that these changes will help to strengthen the work which the provincial executive council has been doing to implement the Transformation, Modernisation and Reindustrialisation (TMR) programme of the Gauteng global city region."
