Johannesburg - The City of Johannesburg is urging residents to use water sparingly amid the heat wave.

"The City of Johannesburg is still under level 2 water restrictions and receiving 15% less water from Rand Water," it said in a statement on Sunday.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said the only solution to the current water shortage was for those who still had water to significantly reduce their consumption immediately.

Meanwhile, parts of Pretoria - in Laudium and Atteridgeville - were without water as a result of water supply restrictions by Rand Water.

The City of Tshwane said reservoir levels had started dwindling greatly in both areas yesterday.

Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said Water and Sanitation in Region 3 and 4 had arranged more than 10 water tankers to deliver water to the two affected areas.

"The distribution of water to consumers is done in conjunction with ward councillors at all times as they know the immediate needs and services of the communities they represent.

"The City of Tshwane hopes that water will be restored fully in the early hours of Monday once the reservoirs have had time to recover during night time."

Residents in affected areas in both Tshwane and Johannesburg were advised to reduce consumption to immediate household use only, specifically drinking, cooking and toilets.
