Durban - A two-year-old girl died after falling eight storeys in Durban on Sunday morning.

The girl is believed to have fallen out of the window of her family's flat.

ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaar, said that paramedics were returning to the station when bystanders stopped them on Gillepsie Street in Durban.

"Upon inspection, the paramedics found a small crowd gathered on the sidewalk (pavement) around the lifeless body of the girl."

She was declared dead on the scene while her mother was treated for shock.

"A severely distraught mother explained to paramedics that the girl and her other child were playing inside the flat when the incident happened. At this stage it is not clear how the child fell out of the window," Vermaak said in a statement.

The Saps and Metro Police cordoned off the area while they waited for investigating officers to attend the scene.
