Ladysmith - A five-year-old girl was killed and three other people injured when a car and truck collided on the N11 about 40km outside Ladysmith on Monday night, paramedics said.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and found the car pinned against the barrier on the side of the road, ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said.

The driver was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated. He was critically injured, she said.

"The child was found between him and the barrier. Sadly there was nothing that could be done for the child."

The girl was declared dead on the scene.

A woman, who was a passenger in the same vehicle, was found outside on the side of the road with moderate injuries, said Bodasing.

The driver of the truck had minor injuries.

All three injured were taken to hospital.

The cause of the accident was not known.
