Durban - A community leader was gunned down in a hit-style killing at the Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi on Thursday night.

Eleven people have been killed in hostel violence since the beginning of September.

Community activist Vanessa Burger, who has been campaigning for greater law enforcement intervention at the hostel, said Bongani Mthembu, the chairperson of Ubunye bama Hostela, a non-political organisation for hostel residents, was gunned down shortly after parking his car at Block R.

“Bongani had previously been shot in the knee by R5 wielding gunmen during an attack on a group of men sitting in the garage behind Block R on August 19, 2014. AK47 casings were also found at the scene of last year’s attack,” she said.

“Eleven people have been killed in the Glebelands violence since the beginning of September and there have been over 35 incidents of violence recorded in the same time.

"From forced evictions, intimidation, extortion, incineration of vehicles, hijacking and to attempted murders, a total of 52 people are now dead since March 2014,” Burger said.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said the motive for the killing was unknown.

“The investigations are continuing and no arrests have been made.”
