LISTEN: Breytenbach claims political motive behind charges

2016-03-16 12:48

Glynnis Breytenbach maintains the NPA is pursuing a politically motivated campaign against her.WATCH

Pretoria - A docket on DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach, containing charges of obstruction and defeating the ends of justice, has been stolen, the Hawks said on Wednesday.

Hawks spokesperson Major Robert Netshiunda said the docket was stolen on Friday from a vehicle used by one of the members of the investigation team.

"Suspects broke into the vehicle of one of the team members investigating the case when it was parked next to our offices in Sunnyside, Pretoria on Friday.

"Only the said docket was stolen," Netshiunda said.

A copy of the docket had already been handed to Breytenbach's lawyers, he added.

A case of motor vehicle theft and malicious damage to property was opened with the Sunnyside police.

Breytenbach is currently out on R10 000 bail.

The National Prosecuting Authority laid charges against Breytenbach, claiming she shredded relevant papers and wiped clean her laptop while she was still the head of the organisation's specialised commercial crimes unit.

The NPA also believes her lawyer, Gerhard Wagenaar, refused to hand over her laptop, which was believed to contain evidence related to the case.

The DA has accused the NPA of fabricating the charges.

"We are not going to suspend her until we see the charge sheet and until we know this is not politically motivated," the DA's Tshwane mayoral candidate, Solly Msimang, said during Breytenbach's last court appearance.

The NPA has, however, maintained that they have a strong case against her.

"We always maintain that when we take a decision to prosecute, there are always reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution," NPA spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku said at the time.

Mfaku maintained that there was no political motive behind the case.
