Ngqamakhwe – The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) said on Saturday that they were shocked after a 76-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping his 33-year-old granddaughter in Ngqamakhwe.

On Friday Captain Jackson Manatha said: "The victim would be raped by her grandfather when she went to do the cleaning for the suspect [since January this year].

A community member told the woman's grandmother about the alleged rape.

The grandmother did not live with the man.

"The suspect would threaten his 33-year-old granddaughter to not tell anyone about the rape as he would kill her," said Manatha.

He said social workers interviewed the woman, who broke down and told them about how she had been raped for a year.

The man has been charged with rape and is expected to appear in the Ngqamakhwe Magistrate's Court on Monday.

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible the despicable, heinous act and commend the bystander intervention by the neighbour who took a stand against the scourge of incest rape that affects women and children,” said Sanco spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu.

Mahlangu urged victims of gender based violence to break the silence.
