Johannesburg – South African racing car driver Gugu Zulu, who died while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, will be honoured with a trust for his family, a friend said on Tuesday.

Stephen Watson said he and his wife Leigh had approached Zulu's family in a bid to start a trust for his family.

"Gugu was a long standing friend and we have known each other for 15 years. He gave his time abundantly. We just want to ensure that his beautiful wife and his princess are well taken care of," Watson told News24.

He commended Zulu for living a selfless and humble life.

"He spent most of his time working on charities – and giving came natural to him. He lived a full life. We have already had an overwhelming response from people overseas about the trust," he said.

Meanwhile, family spokesperson Tseliso Motloheloa, 59, said the family would continue with Zulu's legacy.

"It is devastating for the family but we have accepted what had happened to him, however, we want to build on what he had achieved and continue his legacy," said Motloheloa.

"We have also acknowledged that Gugu doesn't belong to us as a family, but he belongs to a lot of people out there – he touched a lot of people's lives."

Zulu died on Monday while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with his wife Letshego.

He reportedly experienced breathing problems on Sunday and was rushed to hospital.

This year's Trek4Mandela expedition was intended to create awareness of the problems facing impoverished girls in rural areas during menstruation.

The expedition also hoped to raise money to buy sanitary towels for needy girls across the country to ensure they did not miss school.
