Cape Town - Rashied Staggie and three accomplices were allegedly found in possession of expensive whisky and cigars worth millions of rands, apparently stolen from a Johannesburg container depot last week.

The contraband found in Thursday’s arrest on the N1 was believed to have come from two containers stolen from Cleveland between April 10 and 18, Lieutenant Lloyd Ramovha said.

Also in the group’s possession were three unlicensed guns and ammunition.

The Hawks arrested the men, aged between 20 and 60, after a convoy of three "luxurious" vehicles was pulled over near Canal Walk.

Police were only willing to confirm that one of the men was a "well-known former inmate and gang leader in the Cape Flats", who was out on parole.

A well-placed source confirmed that Staggie was among those apprehended.

Staggie, once the leader of the Hard Livings gang, was granted full parole in 2014 after serving 13 years behind bars for a burglary at the Faure police armoury.

Pagad members killed his brother Rashaad, who also held a top rank in the gang, in 1996. He was shot and set alight in Salt River.
