Pretoria - Residents of Hakdoornlaagte, East of Pretoria say they are living in fear following the murder of two people in the area.

"We woke up today to calls about two of our people being killed," William Phadu told News24.

He said their fear stems from an earlier incident in which shacks in the area were torched. He said he suspected that the killings were linked to this.

"On May 29, our shacks were burnt and since then, we have been targeted by the perpetrators. We suspect it's the same people. We are living in fear and some of us have had to leave the area for our own safety," he said.

Police spokesperson Constable Connie Moganedi said police were called to the scene of the crime by a man who survived Wednesday evening's attack.

"The person who called the police said he was with the two men who were killed. He said they were sleeping when they heard a knock on the door. One man opened the door and the group attacked them," she said.

The man managed to escape the attack and returned in the morning to see what had happened. Moganedi said the man found the two lying outside and called police.

She would not speculate on whether the two attacks were linked.

"We are busy with investigations and they will reveal if the attacks are linked. At this stage no one has been arrested in connection with the crime."
