A street hawker was killed, when he slipped and fell under a vehicle, while running away from an impending collision in Krugersdorp, paramedics said on Sunday.

A vehicle apparently experienced brake failure when coming down a steep hill at the Pinehaven crossing, on Sunday morning, at approximately 08:30am, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman in a statement.

It subsequently crashed into another vehicle at a traffic light.

“A street hawker who was selling his merchandise at the traffic light saw what was going to occur and tried to run to safety; tragically he tripped and fell under an oncoming vehicle and sustained severe injuries.”

Dollman said that paramedics in the vicinity heard the collision, and went to assist on the scene.

“He [the street hawker] went into cardiac arrest and they initiated CPR.”

The man, believed to be around 30 years old, was taken to hospital nearby.

“There the paramedics along with the doctors and emergency unit staff did everything in their power to save the man’s life. However his injuries were too severe and he died”.

He is yet to be identified.

“The occupants of the vehicles that were involved in the collision escaped without serious injury.”

Police are investigating the incident.
