Northam – The Hawks are investigating the murders of two rival union members employed at Northam Platinum, the company said on Tuesday.

“The Hawks will now handle the case. It is considered as a priority crime investigation. It shows you the seriousness of the case,” CEO Paul Dunne told News24.

Calm had since returned to the mine, but underground operations were still suspended, he said.

Mine management and police met NUM and Amcu leaders on Monday evening to explore ways to end the dispute. Dunne said the meeting would resume on Tuesday morning.

Mthetheleli Zefunele, 45, a National Union of Mineworkers member, was shot in the head at a four-way stop in Northam around 15:20 on Sunday. The killer ran away.

On Monday, an Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union member was stabbed with an assegai. The NUM and Amcu clashed on the R510 between Northam and Thabazimbi. Public order police fired rubber bullets to disperse the groups.

“As far as we know it was sparked by the murder of the 45-year-old man on Sunday," Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto said of the second murder and the clashes.

No arrests had been made in the two murder cases.
