Durban - The Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation is probing the slaying of an Umlazi police officer who was shot in the face while chasing a murder suspect in U-Section on Monday night.

According to first responders, the officer was found in a pool of blood behind a house.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that the officer had been chasing a man who was wanted for a suspected murder.

"It is alleged that the police officer was on duty yesterday when he received a report about a suspect who had just shot and killed a security guard at U-Section, Umlazi.

"The police officer followed information and saw the suspect in the area. It is alleged that the suspect opened fire at the officer and shot him dead," Zwane said.
