Mahikeng – Authorities are searching for a man – age unknown – who is allegedly misrepresenting himself as a lawyer around the small town of Taung in the North West, the Hawks said on Wednesday.

On May 30, the suspect, in an alleged fraudulent act, represented an accused who was appearing for a bail application on a murder case at the Taung Magistrate's Court.

According to Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso of the Hawks, the magistrate interrupted court proceedings and requested that the suspect sees him in his chambers.

He was then allegedly asked to present his qualifications, as well as his Letter of Appearance from the National Attorneys Roll. He agreed to furnish the magistrate with the documents, asking if he could go and fetch them in his car, before disappearing and never being seen again.

"It is alleged that the magistrate called the bogus lawyer to the chambers because he seemed confused and perplexed at times," Rikhotso told News24.

The accused he was representing did not get bail on that day, as the case was postponed, but Rikhotso confirmed that the accused had attained new representation, and subsequently got bail.

The suspect is said to be going by the name of "Lucas Luthi", and he previously presented himself at the Taung Magistrate’s Court between April and May 2016, charging individuals cash for representation.

"At this stage, we have four statements from complainants. We have reason to believe that there might be more people that he represented. He allegedly charged different amounts to different people," said Rikhotso, adding that the "lawyer" had charged the murder accused R1 500 for representing them in the local Magistrate’s Court.

The man is alleged to have been operating in Taung, however, Rikhotso confirmed that his whereabouts were currently unknown, and urged those with information to come forward.

Those with information have been requested to contact Warrant Officer Motlhaoleng of the Hawks Klerksdorp Serious-Corruption Offence on 071 481 2696.
