Johannesburg - The Hawks have welcomed the sentencing of former Northern Cape ANC provincial chairman John Block for his role in a multi-million-rand corruption scandal.

Block and former businessman Christo Scholtz were sentenced on Tuesday to an effective 15 years in jail for money laundering and corruption.

On Sunday national Hawks head Berning Ntlemeza applauded the officers who had worked on the case.

"This shows that were are committed to work around the clock in fighting against the harm caused by corruption in our country," he said.

"We hope that this will serve as a deterrent to all corrupt civil servants and that it is also indicative of the excellent relationship between the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority."

A statement by the Hawks said Block and Scholtz, the former head of Trifecta Holdings, were found guilty of fraud and corruption.

"They will both serve 15 years imprisonment and additionally, a forfeiture order of R2 million was made against John Block while R53 million confiscation was made against Scholtz and Trifecta," it said.
