Johannesburg – Three men were killed and two women critically injured when the truck in which they were travelling collided with another truck on the N11 near Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal, paramedics said on Friday.

The trucks collided head-on at around 16:00, ER24 spokesperson, Chitra Bodasing, said. One truck was travelling towards Newcastle while the other was heading to Volksrust.

Arriving at the scene, paramedics found the three men had been ejected from the truck.

"They were found on the road. They were assessed. Sadly there was nothing that could be done for them. They had succumbed to their injuries," said Bodasing.

One of women was found lying on the side of the road, while the other had to be removed from the same truck. They were treated on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the second truck was not injured, Bodasing said.
