Pietermaritzburg - The Department of Health is investigating a senior emergency services manager for his alleged private use of a state response vehicle.

One of only about a dozen Advanced Life Support (ALS) vehicles commissioned for the Pietermaritzburg district is allegedly being used in a private capacity by KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services (KZN EMS) acting district manager Cyprian Mthimkhulu.

The startling allegations, supported by visual evidence, were made by multiple sources under Mthimkhulu’s command.

Sources said while paramedics scramble with limited resources, Mthimkhulu has been using a fully-equipped Nissan Xtrail for shopping and running other personal errands before taking the vehicle home after his shift.

The allegations were supported by pictures of the vehicle parked at the Cascades shopping centre for over 45 minutes on one occasion, and witnesses claim to have seen Mthimkhulu taking the vehicle home every day.

This has apparently been going on for several months.

“He [Mthimkhulu] takes the vehicle home after work and returns with it the next morning. Some ALS paramedics are forced to use unroadworthy vehicles without spare tyres, wheelspanners or jacks while this fully equipped vehicle is used for shopping,” one source said.

The department was asked detailed questions regarding the allegations, and in reply spokesperson Sam Mkhwanazi said the department notes the allegations raised, but will respond fully only once they have “gathered all the facts regarding this matter”.
